Symptoms that should be assessed

Many proctological conditions cause similar symptoms, so a reliable diagnosis cannot be made from one symptom alone. Blood in the stool should be medically assessed.

  • Bright-red blood on toilet paper or stool
  • Itching, burning, moisture or pressure
  • Pain, lumps or swelling around the anus
  • Discharge, repeated inflammation or an opening that does not heal
  • Changes in bowel habit together with other symptoms

What happens during the examination

We first discuss the type, duration and course of your symptoms. An external inspection and, where needed, a careful digital examination follow. A short examination of the anal canal may help identify the cause.

Each step is explained beforehand. Please tell us immediately if anything is painful. Whether further tests such as a colonoscopy are appropriate depends on the findings and your history.

Haemorrhoids, abscesses and fistulas

Haemorrhoids are normal vascular cushions that can cause symptoms when enlarged. Treatment ranges from conservative measures to outpatient or surgical procedures.

An anal abscess is a painful collection of pus and needs prompt assessment. An anal fistula is an inflammatory channel that may remain after an abscess. Severe pain, increasing swelling or fever requires timely medical care.
