Outpatient surgery in Bad Wörishofen
Assessment and treatment of an ingrown toenail
An ingrown toenail can cause redness, swelling and pain. More advanced inflammation may weep, bleed or produce pus. Dr Adem Dobra assesses whether conservative care is enough or a small outpatient procedure may help.

Signs and common causes
A side edge of the nail presses into the surrounding skin, causing redness, swelling and pressure pain. Granulation tissue, bleeding, discharge or pus may develop.
Cutting nails too short or rounded, tight shoes and heavy sweating can contribute. Natural nail shape also plays a role.
Conservative care or an outpatient procedure
Mild inflammation may respond to pressure relief, wound care, dressings or a nail brace. Persistent symptoms, pus or marked inflammation may require a procedure to remove the troublesome nail edge.
The examination determines the method, local anaesthetic and follow-up wound care. Do not cut or manipulate inflamed tissue yourself.
Diabetes and circulation problems
Diabetes, nerve damage and poor circulation increase the risk of healing problems. Redness, open areas or inflammation should be assessed early, even if they are not painful.

Frequently asked questions
When should I see a doctor?
Seek care if symptoms persist, the toe is very inflamed, pus appears or redness spreads. Attend earlier if you have diabetes or poor circulation.
Does it always require surgery?
No. Mild cases can often be managed conservatively. A procedure is considered for persistent, recurrent or advanced inflammation.
Is the whole nail removed?
Not in every case. Treatment often targets only the troublesome side of the nail, depending on the examination.
